The Armenian Prelacy of Canada

In 1958, the Armenian Prelacy of the United States of America was established. It represented, under its jurisdiction, all the churches in the United States and Canada. Over the years, as the number of churches grew, the Armenian Prelacy of America was divided into two jurisdictions: Eastern and Western. During this time, churches in Canada remained under the Eastern Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

Over the passing years, more churches were constructed, and in 2002, the Armenian Prelacy of Canada was established. Throughout this period, His Holiness Catholicos Aram I designated His Eminence, then-Bishop Khajag Hagopian, as the Locum Tenens of the Prelacy.

In February 2004, His Eminence Archbishop (elevated in 2003) Khajag Hagopian was elected as Prelate of Canada, becoming the first Prelate of the newly established Armenian Prelacy of Canada. His tenure extended into May 2006 when, during the National Representatives Assembly conference in St. Catharines, Ontario, Archbishop Khajag Hagopian was re-elected as Prelate of Canada for a second term. This re-election occurred once more in May 2010, marking his third term, in Toronto, Ontario.

In May 2014, after serving diligently, Archbishop Khajag Hagopian retired from Prelate duties. The National Representatives Assembly convened in Montreal, Quebec, and elected His Grace Bishop Meghrig Parikian, now departed, as the new Prelate of the Armenian Prelacy of Canada.

In 2016, His Eminence Archbishop Papken Tcharian was elected as the Prelate of the Armenian Prelacy of Canada, by the Canadian Armenian Representative Assembly.
