History

The Armenian Theological Seminary has a strong impact on all the aspects of the mission of the Catholicosate of Cilicia.

The active presence of hundreds of clergy and laity graduates of the Seminary serving in churches and educational, social and cultural institutions in Armenia and worldwide Diaspora testifies the unique role that the Seminary plays in the life of the Armenian Church and people.

The history of the Seminary is an inseparable part of the changing conditions of the Armenian people. After the Armenian Genocide of 1915, the Holy See of Cilicia was exiled from its centuries-old homeland. In 1930, it took refuge in Antelias, Lebanon. The same year H.H. Catholicos Sahak II establishes the Seminary in the new headquarter of the Catholicosate which became “the heart” of the life and mission of the Holy See of Cilicia.

The contribution of the graduates of the Seminary to the formation and organization of the Diaspora was pivotal. The Seminary has contributed significantly to the missionary and educational task of the Armenian Church, as well as to its spiritual renewal. It has met the challenges of changing times and the needs of the Armenian people with a profound sense of responsibility.

The Seminary continues to play a pivotal role in the life and witness of the Armenian Church.
