A DELEGATION FROM THE MADENATARAN IN LEBANON

From February 22nd to 26th, 2024, His Holiness Catholicos Aram I hosted a delegation from the Mesrob Mashdots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, Armenia, also known as Madenataran, in Antelias. The delegation, led by Director Ara Khzmalyan, included Deputy Director Vahe Torossian and Advisors to Director Kourken Kasbarian and Mihran Minassian.

 

Throughout the visit, the delegation engaged in meetings with His Holiness Catholicos Aram I to explore opportunities for enhancing cooperation between the Holy See of Cilicia and Madenataran. The discussions focused on the reassessment of Armenian manuscript heritage, collaboration between manuscript centers, and initiatives related to the preservation, restoration, and digitization of manuscripts. Additionally, talks revolved around the prospect of organizing a congress to address the current state and future goals of Armenian studies. His Holiness expressed profound commendation for Madenataran, acknowledging its significant role in the Armenian culture. He extended a warm welcome to Director Khzmalian in his new role, offering best wishes for a dedicated tenure. The Catholicos also commended the delegation for their fruitful meetings and offered his thoughts and comments on the projects presented to him.

 

The delegation’s itinerary included visits to various significant sites, such as the Armenian Catholic Monastery in Bzommar, where a memorandum of cooperation was signed. They also visited St. Mary’s Monastery and the Armenian Theological Seminary of the Holy See of Cilicia, as well as the Birds’ Nest Armenian Orphanage and the Armenian Genocide Orphans’ “Aram Bezikian” Museum in Byblos.

 

In addition, the delegation conducted a talk at the Cilicia Museum Hall with the Cilician Brotherhood and attendees from the Catholicosate’s Armenological Center, including representatives, teachers, and students.
