FROM INTROSPECTION TO REORGANIZATION: HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I’S THIRD MEETING WITH THE LEBANESE ARMENIAN COMMUNITY AS PART OF THE YEAR OF THE ARMENIAN DIASPORA INITIATIVES

Within the framework of “The Year of the Armenian Diaspora,” initiatives, the third and concluding meeting, titled “From Introspection to Reorganization,” between His Holiness Catholicos Aram I and the Lebanese Armenian community took place on Wednesday, October 24th, 2023, in the Yercho Samuelian-Yerakuyn Hall of the Armenian Prelacy in Lebanon. Distinguished guests included leaders from Lebanese Armenian political parties and representatives from cultural organizations, educational institutions, and associations actively engaged within the community.

The opening speech was delivered by the Prelate H.E. Archbishop Shahe Panossian, who expressed joy over the collective readiness to reorganize the diaspora. He assured that the attendees are driven to reassess their skills and duties to shape a new vision.

Next, MP Hagop Pakradounian, the chair of the ARF and head of the Armenian Parliamentary bloc, gave his speech in which he expressed his gratitude for the ongoing support of His Holiness in the efforts to strengthen the Armenian community. He asserted that this appreciation may diminish if the leaders fail to commit themselves to revitalizing and restructuring the community.

Subsequently, His Holiness delivered his address, highlighting the nuances that set each diaspora community apart. While common concerns unite various communities, it is essential to recognize the significant differences that come into play during the reorganization process.

In the context of Lebanon, the Armenian community was predominantly formed in the aftermath of the Armenian genocide. The survivors, seeking refuge in Lebanon, rallied around the collective memory of their homeland. However, the outbreak of the Lebanese Civil War in 1975 had a detrimental impact on the Lebanese Armenian community. Nevertheless, His Holiness underlined the community’s unwavering willpower, faith, and hope, which have played a vital role in the community’s rebuilding efforts. In light of these reflections, he posed the question of progressing from reconstruction to reorganization.

His Holiness emphasized two fundamental convictions that should guide us:

  1. Recognizing that it is imperative to reevaluate the community’s current state, entailing a thorough and serious assessment.

  1. Acknowledging our past mistakes and being prepared for significant changes.

Building upon these fundamental principles, His Holiness prioritized six critical aspects that require reorganization, reevaluation, and reexamination: Education, Politics, Spirituality, Organizational structure, Youth, and Manpower.

In conclusion, His Holiness affirmed the unwavering commitment of the Holy See of Cilicia to provide steadfast support for the reorganization of our communities, dedicating all available resources and efforts to this vital cause.

The meeting concluded with the “Bahbanich” prayer led by His Holiness.
