On Tuesday, August 22nd, 2023, His Holiness Catholicos Aram I received the Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon, Moujtaba Amini. The main topics of discussion were the Azerbaijani blockade of Artsakh, which has been ongoing since December 2022, and the delayed Lebanese presidential election.
As His Holiness described the situation of the indigenous people of Artsakh under siege, he insisted that the blockade must be lifted immediately and unconditionally so as to avoid further humanitarian crises. He also stressed the right of Artsakh people to self-determination, recalling Iran’s solidarity with Artsakh in the past based on justice and self-determination, and that Armenians expect more from Iran today.
As the ambassador was highly familiar with Artsakh’s issues, he assured His Holiness that he would convey his concerns and expectations to the Iranian authorities.
At the end of the meeting, His Holiness informed the Ambassador of his upcoming pontifical visit to Iran.
