A MEETING IN EGYPT BETWEEN HIS HOLINESS CATHOLICOS ARAM I, HIS HOLINESS PATRIARCH MOR IGNATIUS APHREM II AND HIS HOLINESS POPE TAWADROS II

On October 17th to 19th, 2022, representatives from the Armenian Church, Holy See of Cilicia, the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch, and the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria convened in the Anba Bishoy Monastery, in Egypt. A fellowship between these three oriental orthodox churches was established in 1996, and since then, the heads of the churches hold meetings successively in Antelias, Cairo and Damascus.

H.E. Arch. Sebouh Sarkissian, Prelate of Tehran, and H.G. Bish. Magar Ashkarian, Pontifical Legate to the Prelacy of Syria are members of the standing committee representing the Holy See of Cilicia. At this meeting, V. Rev. Fr. Sarkis Aprahamian, Director of the Middle East section of the Ecumenical Department, was also in attendance.

After a brief interruption due to the pandemic, the fellowship has once again commenced its meetings. The first two days of this Cairo meeting were spent discussing matters concerning the ongoing theological dialogue between the Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican churches, and membership to the WCC and MECC, among others.

The meeting of the heads of the churches: His Holiness Catholicos Aram I, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II and His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, with the committee took place on October 19th, and a joint statement was issued, where inter-church cooperation, Christian presence in the Middle East and the imperative of conducting social service was underlined.

The upcoming meeting will be held next year, in Antelias.
