LEGAL PROCEEDINGS INITIATED BY THE HOLY SEE OF CILICIA AGAINST THE REPUBLIC OF TURKEY DEMANDING CATHOLICOSATE’S HISTORICAL SEAT IN SIS CONTINUES

In 2015, at the height of centennial of the Armenian Genocide, the Holy See of Cilicia launched a lawsuit against the Republic of Turkey in efforts to acquire and reclaim the historical Catholicosate of Sis, which was for centuries the Seat of the Catholicosate and continues to be lawfully and legitimately owned by the Holy See of Cilicia. The Catholicosate of Sis was unlawfully seized by the then-Ottoman Empire during the Armenian Genocide and continues to be unlawfully occupied by the current-day Turkish regime.

Following a submission at the European Court of Human Rights, the Holy See of Cilicia submitted an amended application to the Turkish court on July 30th, 2019.

Due to continued delays caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the hearing took place on March 30th, 2021. The second date for hearing has not been determined. The legal team headed by His Holiness Catholicos Aram I, continues to follow the lawsuit unfold.
