The Armenology Department of the Catholicosate of Cilicia attends a Consultation Organized by the Chair of the Armenian Studies Department, Oxford University

21-23 Jaunuary 2016. His Holiness Aram I nominated Mr Jirair Tanielian, Director of the Armenology Department of the Catholicosate of Cilicia to attend the meeting. The consultation was organized jointly by the Chair of the Armenian Studies Department, and the Oriental Institute, Oxford University, with the financial support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation; it was held at Pembroke College Oxford.

 

The purpose of the conference was to discuss issues related to Western Armenian. It was led by Theo M. van Lint, Calouste Gulbenkian Professor of Armenian Studies and Fellow of Pembroke College, Dr. Hratch Tchilicngirian Chairman of the Armenian Studies Department, Oxford University, Dr Razmig Panossian, Director of the Armenian Communities Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

 

The participants discussed the current status and the future of the Western Armenian language in the 21st century; they focused on current problems and new challenges to the Western Armenian press. Mr Tanielian addressed the issues from the perspective of the Catholicosate of Cilicia and expressed Catholicos Aram I’s deep concern about the survival of the Western Armenian language and the press.
