BIRDS' NESTBirds nest is an Armenian orphanage operating from Byblos Lebanon for over 90 years. The history of birds nest is an integral part of modern Armenian history as it has been one of the most important post genocide institutions that have helped in the survival and upbringing of thousands of Armenians spread around the world. The legendary Birds’ Nest history began with the American Near east relief organization, established during WWI to alleviate the suffering of the Armenian people after the genocidal policies of the Ottoman Empire towards its Christian minorities. Around 4000 orphans, whose parents were killed, found themselves at one point or another within the Birds Nest compound in Lebanon from all over the Ottoman Empire. Soon after, the orphanage was handed over to Danish missionary Maria Jacobson who spoke fluent Armenian and began working with Armenian orphans since the age of 18 dedicating her life to them until her death at the age of 77. Any Armenian spread throughout the world that has been at Birds Nest from 1928 till 1960 refer to her as “Mama” as she has taken the responsibility of motherhood for thousands of children who needed her. In 1970, the Birds Nest institution was transferred over to the Armenian church of Cilicia to carry on its mission of taking care of Armenian children in need of a home. Under the supervision and direction of the Catholicosate of Cilicia, the Birds Nest Armenian orphanage is open to all children who come from broken families and are in need of care and compassion. Hence, the objectives of the institution is to provide home for the orphaned children and/or social cases, ensure their education, help in their social / psychological development and well being free of charge. The Number of children at Birds’ Nest originally started with 4000 children, today there are 36 children. It has started with a dark history but today anyone that walks in its beautiful gardens and its seashore will understand the power of hope that comes from selfless giving.
