His Holiness receives a message on the situation of Armenians in Venezuela

Upon his return from Kuwait, His Holiness Aram I, who has been following events in Venezuela since the beginnings of the current troubles, shared a report he received from a leader of the Venezuelan Armenian community describing the sufferings of the powerless population there. The report states that the hope for popular democracy has been replaced with fears of dictatorship, economic depression, shortage of food, rocketing inflation, currency collapse, lack of accountability and corruption. It goes on to state that peaceful protests have become daily since April and that people have been on the streets demanding new elections, the release of political prisoners and the end of stealing by the supporters of the president. Fifty or more people have been killed and over 700 injured by police brutality, yet the demonstrations show little sign of abating.

The report attests that supporters of the president assaulted the Catholic Archbishop and looted the church. It confirms that the Armenian community is diminishing in numbers, as many are choosing to emigrate, and that the Prelate, Rev Stephan Pashayan, is patiently accompanying the members of the community.
