His Holiness Aram I and the Staff Leadership of the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) Discuss the Future of Christian Communities in the Middle East

28 December 2015. On Monday morning, Catholicos Aram I met with Rev Dr Michel Jalkh, the General Secretary of the MECC, Mr Elias Halabi, the Associate General Secretary, and directors of the media and other programmes of the Council to discuss the international community attempts to put into place conflict-resolution strategies in the area and to plan for the post-conflict period in the Middle East. They focused on rehabilitation and reconstruction matters.

After listening to the staff proposal, the Catholicos suggested that the MECC establish local committees in Syria, where the members could monitor the evolution of the conflict resolution processes and recommend appropriate responses from the churches. As for the coordination of funds, His Holiness recommended that the MECC approach the relevant UN Agencies, the European Union, the World Council of Churches and the Vatican, as well as other ecumenical organisations.

Following agreement on a framework for a plan of action, the General Secretary discussed with His Holiness the agenda of the forthcoming Assembly of the MECC.
