His Holiness Aram I invited to join the commemoration of the Chaldean Martyrs of 1915

24 October 2015. Upon the invitation of the Bishop of the Chaldean Diocese of Beirut, Michel Kassarji, His Holiness Aram I took part in the special prayers remembering the Chaldean victims of the Ottoman massacres. During the ceremony, speakers addressed the Ottoman atrocities with reference to the Armenian Genocide.

The message of His Holiness Aram I was read in Arabic by Very Rev Housig Mardirossian, the ecumenical officer. In his message, the Catholicos described Christian martyrs as persons who died for their firm attachment to the teachings of Jesus Christ and the implicit life-giving values of those teachings. In dying for those values, he said, they became martyrs of all churches. He noted that Chaldeans and Armenians have always worked and lived together and continue to do so in Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Lebanon. He assured the gathering that they would continue to do so, strengthened by the memory of their martyrs. Speaking of the current suffering of the two peoples in the Middle East, His Holiness Aram I said that the Middle East is the cradle of Christianity, and, therefore, Christians, in cooperation with their Muslim neighbours, will stay in the region, hold onto their rights and be guided by the principle of mutual respect.

At the end of the service the Catholicos consecrated a picture devoted to the Chaldean martyrs.
