HIS HOLINESS ARAM I GREETS THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LIBERATION OF SHUSHI
In a letter addressed to the President of the Armenian Republic of Karabagh, His Holiness Aram I greeted the 20th anniversary of the liberation of Shushi in Karabagh. In the letter His Holiness reminded the strategic importance of this region for the security of Karabagh. He also praised the faith and the courage of Armenian soldiers who shed their blood to restore justice and dignity for the Armenian people.
The President of Karabagh personally invited His Holiness to attend the ceremonies which will take place on the 9th of May. However, due to His prior commitments in Abu Dhabi and Tehran, His Holiness was not able to attend the celebrations.
HIS HOLINESS ARAM I CALLS THE PRESIDENT OF ARMENIAWhile still in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), His Holiness Aram I received the news of the explosions during an electoral rally in Yerevan where several persons were injured. Catholicos Aram I called President Serj Sarkissian and expressed his concern about the incident and wished speedy recovery to the victims. He also added that parliamentary electoral processes should respect democratic principles and safeguard the unity of the nation.
HIS HOLINESS ARAM I INVITED TO THE INTERRELIGIOUS DIALOGUE IN KAZAKHSTANHis Holiness Aram I declined regretfully an invitation to the Interreligious dialogue and mutual understanding of civilizations meeting to be held in the end of May in Astana, because of his busy schedule during the month.
HIS HOLINESS ARAM I CONDEMNS THE BREACH OF FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHTS OF GREEK ORTHODOX BY THE ILLEGAL REGIME OF THE TURKISH OCCUPIED CYPRUS
“THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS IS THE VICTORY OF LIFE OVER DEATH”Said His Holiness Aram I In his Easter Message on Sunday 8 January 2012, Catholicos Aram I said, “Christianity would have lost its purpose and meaning without Christ’s resurrection. Resurrection is the fulfillment of the promise of a renewed Christian life guided by the truth and righteousness of God.”
He addressed two issues that touch the lives of people in the Middle East.
Of the situation in the Arab World, he said, “We would like to see the metaphorical spring become a real spring, whereby the flowers of justice, mutual understanding, peaceful coexistence and human rights break into full bloom.” “Because Christians and Muslims both belong to this region and their histories are interwoven,” he continued, “they should work as partners to demand that as new reforms are introduced in these countries, the full rights of both communities are respected and constitutionally recognized.”
His Holiness Aram I also addressed the internal situation in Lebanon. While he commended the government for restoring internal security, he suggested that more could be done to respond to the urgent needs of the population. For example, he asked, “How can any government deprive its citizens of electricity for more than thirty years?” Finally, he urged the government to hasten dialogue among the different political parties in order to strengthen the unity of the country.
He then blessed the faithful, and prayed that they carry the message of resurrection into their everyday lives.
On Easter Monday, during the liturgy of Memorial for the Deceased that follows every major feast in the Armenian Church, the Catholicos presided over the service. Special prayers were said for the inhabitants of Maragha village in Martakerk, Karabagh, who were massacred twenty years ago.
“THE TOMB OF JESUS IS THE BREATH OF HOPE BECAUSE IT IS THE ANTICIPATION OF RESURRECTION”
Said Aram I in his sermon on Good Friday On Good Friday, 6 April 2012, the service of the commemoration of the last days of Jesus’ life came to its conclusion. In the afternoon, the burial vespers service was held with the participation of old and young in front of the ‘tomb of Jesus,’ which was decorated with flowers brought by the faithful. On the ‘tomb’ lay also the reliquorium with a piece of the wood of the cross of Jesus and other liturgical vessels brought from Cilicia.
During the service, His Holiness and the priest took off their cowls knelt in front of the ‘tomb of Jesus’ and performed the funeral service.
In his sermon, His Holiness Aram I said that the tomb of Jesus fills each one of us with a breath of hope, because it is the anticipation of Resurrection. This is the message of hope that we commit ourselves to every year. Addressing the youth, the Catholicos then said, “through the Holy Week you have come to church in large numbers. Your presence among us demonstrates your attachment to the Church, its faith and traditions. You have been the expression of hope that the disciples experienced beyond the empty tomb.
At the end of the vespers His Holiness blessed the people with the reliquorium, and then the faithful passed under the tomb and took a flower from it as a symbol of Christian hope in their lives.
“HUMILITY THAT JESUS TAUGHT US IS THE GREATEST VALUE EMBODYING LOVE AND SERVANTHOOD"
Said His Holiness Aram I in his sermon On Thursday 5 April 2012, Antelias was filled with both old and young, who came to commemorate Jesus’ last days on earth.
In the morning after the Matins, His Holiness Aram I presided over the Liturgy of penitence and the New Covenant. In the afternoon, during the service commemorating Jesus’ washing of the feet of the disciples, His Holiness Aram I washed the feet of 12 priests and seminary students. In his sermon, based on the Gospel reading, Catholicos Aram I said, “Through this humble act, the Son of God showed us God’s profound love towards us all.” He stressed that Jesus’ humility is the essence of Christian life. Only through humility and total giving, stated the Catholicos, can we express true love. True love leads to cooperation among people and respect for one another; this cooperation and respect pave the way to peaceful living. At the end of the ceremony, the faithful took home some of the blessed oil with which the Catholicos had anointed the feet of the seminarians.
The service of Lamentations continued in the evening with commemoration of the passion of Jesus. Friar Hovhannes Saghdjian, the celebrant, preached on the Jesus’ self sacrifice. Amidst prayers and hymns, priests read the seven stories of the passion from the Gospels, and after each reading, each of the faithful made a knot on a thread. According to tradition, people wear this thread with seven knots on their arms until the feast of the Ascension.
At the end of the Lamentations service, His Holiness Aram I blessed the people with a special prayer on the meaning of the wooden cross.

COMMEMORATION OF THE PARABLE OF THE TEN MAIDENS IN ANTELIASOn Great and Holy Tuesday during the evening service, the Armenian Orthodox Church commemorated the parable of the Ten Maidens in Antelias. After prayers and hymns on the theme, reminding the faithful to be prepared for the Day of Judgment, the priest read the parable (Mathew 25:14-30). As is the tradition, during the Gospel reading, ten young students from “Yeghishé Manoukian school presented themselves in front of the Altar holding candles; the five ‘wise’ women were prepared to wait for the ‘bridegroom’ with their candles until he arrived, while the other five ‘foolish’ women were unprepared.
After the service, His Holiness Aram I received the ten young women, and encouraged them to continue to safeguard their faith through the teachings of the Armenian church. He also encouraged them to shape their lives around the family and the school and enrich themselves with their inherited cultural heritage.
HIS HOLINESS ARAM I BLESSES THE CHILDREN ON PALM SUNDAYA large number of children and their parents gathered at the St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral in Antelias to celebrate Palm Sunday. After the liturgy, the celebrant Archbishop Norayr Achekian led the traditional procession, followed by the clergy, seminary students, the children and their parents.
At the end of the procession, His Holiness Aram I greeted the children and the faithful from the balcony of his residence, and said, “Today, we celebrate Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. Walking in procession is not only a symbol of that joyful event, but also a manifestation of the deep faith that you and your children have in Jesus. Throughout our history we have been able to survive and rebuild our lives only because of our faith that shaped us as a people. We should seek to instill in our children a powerful commitment to the spiritual, moral and cultural values of our ancestors.” At the end of the message, the children with their parents and all the faithful joined Catholicos Aram I at the main hall of his residence to receive blessings.
Dear fellow Armenians, Human resources is the indicator of a nation's or community's inner power and creative mind and a guarantor of its bright future. The Armenian Diaspora is rich with human resources. It is vitally important that we get a clear, accurate and comprehensive information about our human resources in the Diaspora. Indeed, "Information is power; and the power of knowledge and information becomes a source of deeper self-understanding and self-affirmation" according to His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of Cilicia. The Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia has initiated a program aimed at gathering information about our human resources in the Diaspora. By human resources we basically mean: community leaders, clergy, economists, people of media, writers, politicians, artists, public figures, medical doctors, teachers, university lecturers, businessmen, and generally specialists in the area of science and technology, etc. This initiative has the full support of His Holiness. Thus, we kindly ask you to fill in the Form and submit it to the Catholicosate, Antelias, Lebanon. We also ask you to forward this e-mail (with the link http://www.armeniancatholicosate.org) to your friends.
